Adobe Photoshop Tutorial: Working With Layers

In the video tutorial below, I demonstrated how to work with layers. Layers are important, element in Adobe photoshop which are used for manipulating their content.

Photoshop layers are like sheets of stacked acetate. You can see through transparent areas of a layer to the layers below. You move a layer to position the content of the layer, like sliding a sheet of acetate in a stack. You can also change the opacity of a layer to make content partially transparent.
Transparent areas on a layer let you see layers below. You use layers to perform tasks such as compositing multiple images, adding text to an image, or adding vector graphic shapes. You can apply layer style to add a special effect such as a drop shadow or a glow.

The most important skills as of today for a graphics designer is Drawing skills and illustration skills. However, quickly check if graphics design is for you. Once a graphics designer get an idea the best thing is to pen down the idea before it can be digitalized. The three most used applications are InDesign, Photoshop and Illustration.

INDESIGN

InDesign is an application used in producing documents for print and on-screen delivery. It possesses a variety collection of tools that will enable a graphic designer to customize every element of his/her design. It gives delivery like print publications, e-books, digital magazine etc. It is also a great tool for creating interactive PDF's or exporting EPUBs- a standard e-book file format.

Another benefit is that it comprises of great tools for editing like cropping and straightening, shadow and highlight detail, sharpening, masking, compositing, and retouching, color, and tonal adjustments. Photoshop gives the designer ability to edit non-destructively i.e editing an image without affecting the original version, working in layers, using masks, and alot more.

Photoshop Tutorial: How to Add a Vintage Film Border in Photoshop

Film Border Stock Images
The first step to adding a Vintage film border to any digital photo is to find an image online or scan your own film.

There are many stock photo websites to choose from, in this case, we found the film border on Adobe Stock.

Once you have found a stock photo of a film border, open it in Photoshop along with the original image. Place the original image over the film border and resize it so the image only appears in the center of the film border.

Next, double click on the film border to convert it to a regular layer and bring it to the top of the layer stack.

Change the blending mode of the film border layer to ‘Multiply’ to set the effect. Multiply Blend Mode will make the dark areas of a layer visible and the Light areas invisible, allowing the original photo to show through the center.

Photoshop Tutorial: Adding Motion Blur To Background

In this photoshop how to tutorials, I found an exciting way to add depth and movement to photos by adding Motion Blur to Backgrounds. Follow the following steps to add motion blur to background:-

Step 1: Separate the image from the background. Create a duplicate of the background layer and use the Spot Healing Brush Tool to remove the subject. Be sure that “Sample All Layers” and “Content Aware” are checked on the top of the Screen.
Step 2: Paint over the subject and the Tool will fill them in with information from the background. This doesn’t have to be perfect, after all, you will be applying a blur to the background. The main goal is to make sure the subject is not blurred with the background.
Step 3: After removing the subject from the Background, turn the duplicate layer into a Smart Object by right-clicking on the layer and going to “Convert To Smart Object”. With a Smart Object you can use Smart Filters, and when adding a blur of any kind, it is best to be done as a Smart Filter. Smart Filters can be changed at any time, making them more versatile and less destructive.
Step 4: It is time to add the blur to the Smart Object. The type of blur will change depending on the Motion of the photo. In this case, we use a simple “Left-to-Right” Motion Blur because the subject is moving horizontally across the image. If the subject in your photo is moving towards or away from the camera, choose a Path Blur and create paths in the direction of the movement.
Step 5: After applying a Motion Blur or Path Blur to the background, it is time to reveal the original subject. Lower the Opacity of the layer to about 80% and add a layer mask to the blurred Smart Object. Paint black on the Layer Mask over the original subject to reveal them through the Smart Object Layer. Take your time to create an accurate selection around the subject. After completing the layer mask, change the Smart Object layer Opacity to 100% and you are done!
Step 6: To change the amount of blur on the background, double click on the Blur Smart Filter, and adjust the blur amount. The Layer Mask will stay intact, revealing the subject and provide an instant preview of the Background blur with a still subject.

Photo Editing/ Manipulation: How To Add Fire In Adobe Photoshop

Using fire and flames in photos/images can be fun in Adobe Photoshop. The ability to harness fire separates mankind from all other animals, in this tutorial you will learn how to create digital fire.

How to Render Flames in Photoshop
A new addition to Photoshop cc 2015 brings the power to Render Flames with a surprising amount of control.

To create flames, first, create a New Layer and make a path you want the fire to follow using the Pen Tool. This Pen path can mimic that of regular fire or make a shape for Special Effects.

After selecting the path, go to ‘Filter – Render – Flame…’ Here you can choose from a variety of options to create different types of flames.

We suggest using a reference image to model the flames after. In this example, we add rendered flames to an existing campfire, making it look larger.

How to Make Fire Look Realistic
After rendering Flames in Photoshop, convert the Flame layer into a Smart Object. Change the blending mode of the fire layer to ’Screen’ or ‘Lighten’, fire will never make a photo darker.

The flames may benefit from a little blur to make them more realistic. Because we converted the layer into a Smart Object, we can use Smart Blur Filters. Go to ‘Filter – Blur – Gaussian Blur’ and choose a blur radius to match the photo. If you need to change the blur radius at any time, double-click on the Filter in the Layers menu and adjust the slider.

How To Remove And Add Color Background To Photo/Image In Adobe Photoshop

Thought I should add another perspective on how to remove and add color background to photo/image in Adobe Photoshop CS6 apart from my tutorial on the same subject.

How to Add a Colored Background to a Portrait it Photoshop
Add a splash of colour to your photos by replacing the background. Learn how to quickly add a colored background to any portrait in Photoshop using the Magic Wand Tool

How to Cut Out the Photo/Image
When cutting a photo/image out of their background, there are different techniques based on the complexity of the background. If the subject is photographed on a simple Background similar to the image in this tutorial, simple Selection Tools like the Magic Wand Tool will work well.

For complex Backgrounds, we recommend using the Pen Tool.

After making a rough selection of the subject in a photo, use the “Select and Mask” Tool to refine the edge of the selection.

Add a Splash of Color to the Background
Once the subject is cut out from the Background, the possibilities are endless. From here, you can add another photo as the Background of a photo, or a simple colored background to simulate a studio photo.

To create a colored background, go to ‘Layer – New Fill Layer‘ and choose a Color. Place this layer below the layer with the subject and the new Color will appear behind the subject.

To add a bit of realism, add a Vigentte to the borders of the photo. Go to ‘Layer – New Adjustment Layer – Hue/Saturation‘ to create a Hue/Saturation. Lower the Lightness and Saturation then use the eliptical Marquee Selection Tool to create a selection around the center of the image and fill the selection with black. To make the Vignette more realistic, add a Gaussian Blur to the Layer Mask.

Fundamentals of Graphics Design 3: 5 Essential Principles of Graphic Design

This is a sequel to my earlier post fundamentals of graphic design 2: visual elements and here am going to be talking on six essential principles of graphics design.“Design, is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.” –Steve Jobs
The quote above credited to Steve Jobs agrees with the assertion that graphics design is guided by principles. Principles such as contrast, proximity, alignment, repetition, and simplicity.

CONTRAST:
The differential or contrast between 2 visual elements in graphics design can make a design quite noticeable. The differences could be in shape, colour, alignment, layout or scale.

PROXIMITY:
The closeness to each other of visual elements can be used greatly to enhance the design. When shapes are placed together, relationship that is resulting in a new impression is created and this can create a new world of exciting scenery.

ALIGNMENT:
Alignment is an important principle of graphics design which when used adequately can make a design absolutely outstanding. Elements can be aligned left, right, centered, vertically or horizontally. Allow yourself the freedom to explore.

REPETITION:
The use of repetition of elements in graphics design is to draw the attention of the audience. When used properly, repetition of visual elements can be appealing to the eyes.

SIMPLICITY:
The first design principle my coach taught me is the principle of simplicity. Like in every aspect of life its always good to keep it simple, avoid crowding the design space with many elements. Always remember to keep it simple.

This five (5) principles which are essential and basics to graphics design when mastered will turn a newbie graphics designer to a professional designer with creative designs. For the newbie or would be graphics designer endeavour to read my post fundamentals of graphics design 1: 5 reasons why graphics design is a choice career

Photo/Image Editing In Adobe Photoshop For Beginners

Before Editing
After Editing

The idea of enhancing images was the primary motivation or my decision to learn photoshop. I was fascinated by the many tricks professional photographers apply to photos and images and thus photo editing became my first point of call in Adobe Photoshop. Here are five basic photo editing/enhancement tools every aspiring photo editor and photographer needs to master for photo/image enhancement in Adobe photoshop i.e cropping tool, level adjustments, working with layers, clone stamp, and healing and finally sharpen tool

CROPPING TOOL:
Cropping is the process of removing portions of an image to create focus or strengthen the composition. The Crop tools in Photoshop CS6 are non-destructive and you can choose to retain the cropped pixels to optimize the crop boundaries later. The Crop tool also provides intuitive methods to straighten the image while cropping.

CURVES AND LEVEL:

Another powerful tool available in Photoshop for photos/image enhancement is the curves and level tool. To perfectly enhance your images in a single step with improved Auto options for the Levels, Curves, and Brightness/Contrast adjustments. Use the curves and level too under adjustment.

WORKING WITH LAYERS:
Understanding the concept of layers in Adobe Photoshop and mastering its usage in relation to image enhancement is in my opinion, a critical skill every photo/image editor must acquire. One major advantage of using layers in photo enhancement is the fact that it allows you to make each image adjustment on its own layer, preserving the original and creating a finer sense of control over the edits

CLONE STAMP AND HEALING:
if there are any unwanted elements in your photo/images that needed to be removed, the clone stamp and healing tools are your best option. removing blemishes on skin and stains on sensors is made easier with the clone stamp and healing tool

SHARPEN TOOL:
The Sharpen tool increases contrast along edges to increase apparent sharpness. The more you paint over an area with the tool, the more sharpening increases. Mastering this tool demands that you experiment with it and learn as you go along however it is advicable to always apply this tool as the concluding step in your photo/image editing.

For the beginner photo editor, the aforementioned tools are a good starting point in your photo/image editing journey, I equally started with these tools however there are lots of other tools available in Adobe Photoshop for photo/image editing

Fundamentals Of Graphics Design 2: Visual Elements

According to Wikipedia “Graphic design is the process of visual communication and problem-solving through the use of typography, photography, and illustration. The field is considered a subset of visual communication and communication design, but sometimes the term "graphic design" is used synonymous. Graphic designers create and combine symbols, images and text to form visual representations of ideas and messages. They use typography, visual arts, and page layout  techniques to create visual compositions.”

In this article I shall be discussing the visual elements of graphic design namely: Line, Colour, Shapes, Textures, Space, Form and Typography.

LINE:-
Line as visual element in graphic design: Lines are very important visual element in graphic design and their importance should not be underrated. Lines are the basis on which graphic design is built on, lines could either be straight, thin, thick, curved, solid, and dashed.

The second most basic visual element in graphic design is the “COLOUR”:- Colours can be subdivided into primary colours, secondary colours, tertiary colours, etc. For more on colour visit

The third most basic visual element in graphic design is the “SHAPE”:- Shapes are defined by boundaries, such as a line and colour. Example of shapes include geometric shapes, organic shapes, etc

TEXTURES AND PATTERNS:-
Textures and patterns are also essential visual element in graphic design. Two texture types include Image Texture and Pattern texture.

SPACE:-
Space are important visual element in graphic design and are as important as other important element. Spaces can be positive or negative, example of spaces include overlap, light & shadow, opacity and perspective/Depth .

TYPOGRAPHY:- Typography is the art and technique of arranging type to make written language, legible, readable, and appealing when displayed and is an important visual element in graphic design. Examples include: Serif, Slab serif, Rounded, Blackletter, Decorative, Abstract etc.
These are some important visual element in graphics design, the least above is not exhaustive endeavour to read more on visual elements in graphic design for the comprehensive list.

Fundamentals Of Graphic Design I: 5 Reasons Why Graphic Design Is A Choice Career

Thinking of a career?

“The goal of a designer is to listen, observe, understand, sympathize, empathize, synthesize, and glean insights that enable him or her to ‘make the invisible visible.’ –Hillman Curtis

This article is a respond to a poser by my cousin Tope Ogun who wanted a direction on her career path and why I have chosen to be a graphic designer despite my mass communication background. There are basically 5 reasons why anyone should think graphic design while seeking a career path, I intend in this piece to enumerate the 5 reasons why graphic design is a choice career option especially for the female gender.

Here are the 5 reasons why you should consider taking up a career in graphics design:-
Graphics design allows you to display your creativity, take up challenges while having fun, gives you the ability to express your views expansively, allows you to be a part of a team and lastly graphic design is absolutely rewarding as part of the gig economy.

Graphics Design Allows You To Display Your Creativity

Firstly, Graphic design allows you or someone to display your creativity and your imaginative prowess. A graphic designer is at liberty to express himself or herself however he/she wants to either through the use of color, textures, or patterns.

A graphics designer uses his/her design to transmit the prevailing mood onto a platform. A graphic designer is a creator of sort. Hence if you think you are creative and will like to build on this inbuilt skills then graphics design will provide you with the opportunity.

Take Up Challenges While Having Fun

Graphics design can be very challenging and as such it's a career for those who are eager to take up challenges. However, the challenge graphic design poses can be fun while handling such challenge, especially for the passionate graphic designer.

The Ability To Express Your Views Expansively
Graphic design provides the opportunity for the introvert to express himself/herself without altering a word. Most graphic designers are often quite people who have chosen to express their opinion on a different platform rather than the spoken or written word. Therefore if you think you belong in this category of people perhaps choosing graphic design may be a better career path or career option

Be A Part OF a Team

Graphics design is an integral part of a larger industry and can seldom stand alone. The work of a graphic designer is inter-related and interdependent on other professionals. To be a graphic designer is to be a team player.

If you consider yourself as a team player or building whether actively or passively then you may consider taking the graphic design option as a career.

Graphic Design Is Absolutely Rewarding As Part Of The Gig Economy.

Lastly, graphic design is part of the emerging gig economy which absolutely rewarding and provide a flexible work environment. As a graphics designer, it is easier to reside in Nigeria and work for clients in other part of the world such as Europe, Asia or America. Graphics design allows you to be your own boss easily.

The cost of setting up a professional practice is also minimal in that you only need to have a functional computer system will the appropriate software installed and you are good to go. Hence, if you are looking for a career option that provides such flexibility and reward think graphic design.

If you would like to display your creativity at all times, if you would like to take up challenges while having fun, if you would like to  express your views expansively, if you would like to be a part of a team and work effectively and  if you would like to be adequately compensated in the new gig economy?? Then why not consider taking up a career in graphics design.

N.B: Readers comments and feedback are welcome
